In Ciego de Ávila, disenchantment among young people towards the Union of Young Communists (UJC) is evident, reflecting a marked decline in membership and grassroots structures. At the recent plenary session of the UJC Provincial Committee, Nailyn Machado Ávila, first secretary, reported on the worrying situation: the province has lost 2,906 members since December 2023, which represents a decrease of 15.32% in its ranks.

Grassroots structures have also suffered a hard blow, with a reduction of 10.82% in the same period. This indicates that many young people are choosing not to join or leave the organization, seeking alternatives outside the country due to the difficult economic and social conditions in Cuba.

Yasmani Rodríguez La Rosa, of the UJC National Bureau, recognized deficiencies such as problems with the contribution and operation of grassroots committees, underlining the urgent need to revitalize youth participation in key sectors such as agriculture, science and innovation, as well as in the Youth Technical Brigades.

On the other hand, Arabey Gómez Sosa highlighted the importance of schools in recruiting new members, while Hanoi Castro Reyes pointed out the additional challenges that young people face in terms of health and well-being.

The meeting concluded with a call from Disley López Acosta, from the Organization Department of the Provincial Committee of the Party, urging young people to propose creative solutions to address the problems that affect Cuban society and retain the commitment of youth towards the future of the country.
