Dozens of teachers, as well as parents, in Atlántico held a sit-in this Monday in the Plaza de la Paz to demand that the Congress of the Republic and the Ministry of National Education withdraw the amendments included in the Statutory Law after –as they expressed– the project had been agreed upon with the teaching profession through Fecode.

According to the directors of Adeba and Adea, these new articles are “harmful” for public education and teaching staff throughout the country.

“We are in a national strike and at this moment there are delegations from all over the country to make the situation of the teaching profession visible. We want harmful articles that threaten public education and raise a series of privatizing axes that from our perspective are not healthy for the country or for teachers,” said Alberto Ortiz Saldarriaga, Secretary of Education, to be removed from the draft Statutory Education Law. The leader maintained that these amendments are spread throughout the regulation and propose an evaluation for students and the strengthening of private education.

“We believe that if a Statutory Education Law is generated in Congress, it has to be to strengthen public education and guarantee it as a fundamental right and not to harm it, which is what they are doing,” he said.

Ortiz called on Congress to withdraw the amendment presented by the Democratic Center and Radical Change parties that they consider “contaminate a project that was going well and that had passed without developments in the First Constitutional Commission by Plenary of the Chamber.”

“These modifications are not in keeping with the very spirit of the Statutory Law,” he stated.
