A group of Russian military ships has left the port of Havana to join the rest of its fleet in military exercises in the Caribbean Sea.

The naval detachment, which arrived last week in the Cuban capital, is made up of the frigate Admiral Gorshkov, the oil tanker Akadémik Pashin, the rescue tug Nikolai Chiker and the submarine Kazan.

During the ships’ stay in Havana, the president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, visited the interior of the Admiral Gorshkov frigate and the deck of the Kazan submarine. The president expressed his gratitude to the Russian sailors for the opportunity to visit the ships.

Likewise, Cuban citizens also had the opportunity to see the Admiral Gorshkov frigate.

After the arrival of the Russian ships, a US Navy submarine entered Guantánamo Bay, at the southeastern tip of Cuba. The US Southern Command said the USS Helena, a nuclear-powered fast attack submarine, was making a “routine port visit” during a scheduled voyage in the region.

In turn, AP wrote that the submersible arrived off Cuban shores “in a show of force as a fleet of Russian warships gather for planned military exercises in the Caribbean.”
