The official installation of the Legal Commission for Women’s Equality was successfully carried out in the Departmental Assembly of the Atlantic, which was described by political forces as a milestone in the fight for gender equality in this area of ​​the Colombian Caribbean.

In a session that stood out for its unanimity and consensus. Representative Alejandra Moreno Astwood was elected as President of the Commission.

In her inaugural speech, Moreno Astwood highlighted the importance of this new entity to address the concerns and needs of women in the department.

So far this year in the department, 30 women have been murdered, of these violent deaths 6 have been classified as femicides.

During the event, the deputy also expressed her concern about the absence of representatives of the Attorney General’s Officecalling on the Attorney General’s Office to take action on the matter.

“The absence of the Prosecutor’s Office in the spaces of articulation to respond to the victims is a serious situation. Today, the director of the prosecutor’s office is conspicuous by his absence when it comes to defending the women of the Atlantic,” said Moreno.

The ceremony was attended by prominent figures from the political and social sphere, including María Lourdes Dávila Márquez, Secretary of Women and Gender Equality; Celia Arango Rojas, Secretary of Planning; Luis Carlos Fajardo Jordán, Secretary of Health; and Susana de León, Migrant Population Coordinator of the Government.

Representatives of key entities such asor the Comptroller’s Office, the Attorney General’s Office, the Ombudsman’s Office, Legal Medicine, the Atlantic Victims Unit and the Police.

Furthermore, the event had the emotional participation of Deivis Cepeda and Lourdes Rodríguez, parents of Valentina Cepedaas well as women’s movements and groups in the department, who expressed their support and commitment to the cause.
