Even with the emotional burden on him, Hugo Franco knows the greatness of his performance in the last Olympic archery qualifier. The boy from Vueltabajo carries the nobility of Cuban athletes. In the absence of the Cuban press in the Turkish city of Antalya, he picked up his phone and answered the barrage of questions he received.

–How did you face the challenge of Antalya?

–I knew it would be difficult, it was the last Olympic qualifier, there were all the world-class athletes who were yet to enter Paris. But I had prepared myself to fight anyone. There was terrible heat, the wind was not stable, it changed in all directions and so did its strength. They are elements to take into account when shooting. I got over it and was able to handle it.

–What will be the objective in Paris?

–We have 40 days to work. I will return to Cuba to adjust small details, although I don’t think we need to do much more than what we have designed. We think about a great result, but the main objective is to enjoy the Games, which will be my first. I am very excited and prepared to do my best.

–What does it mean that you have returned Cuban archery to the Olympic stage?

–Our idea was to qualify the team, but that possibility escaped us in Colombia. Returning to this instance is the result of the sacrifice of the Cuban Archery Federation and the Cuban Olympic Committee, for their support. I am proud of this result.
