Within the framework of the celebration of the 72 years of independence of Córdoba, the department commemorates Vueltiao Hat Day, a world-renowned cultural icon.

However, this celebration contrasts with the reality of the indigenous communities and the coastal region, that despite having enormous cultural and tourism potential, are the most affected by poverty and lack of opportunities.

The governor of Córdoba, Erasmo Zuleta emphasized the need to not only celebrate the hat vueltiao, but also to dignify the lives of the people who produce it and who live in the most vulnerable areas of the department.

“It is paradoxical that the indigenous communities and the coastal region, which have enormous cultural and tourism potential, are at the same time the most affected by poverty and lack of opportunities,” said the president.

The governor highlighted that these communities, through their art and culture, have allowed Colombia and the entire world to know the traditions and identity of Córdoba. However, the situation of poverty and lack of opportunities in which they live is a reality that cannot be ignored.

Faced with this situation, the president called to work in an articulated manner to generate strategies that not only preserve and disseminate the cultural heritage of Córdoba, but also improve the quality of life of indigenous and coastal communities.

“It is essential that tourism and cultural promotion efforts go hand in hand with public policies aimed at reducing poverty, strengthening education, health and access to basic services in these areas,” he pointed.

The celebration of Vueltiao Hat Day is an opportunity to reflect on the importance of preserving and valuing the cultural heritage of Córdobabut also to become aware of the need to improve the living conditions of the indigenous communities that make the existence of this cultural icon possible.
