La Niña, a climatic phenomenon associated with intense rains, floods and overflows, continues to affect the population of Antioquia. This time the community in the municipality of Andes (Antioquia) is shocked by the death of community leader Ricardo Arango, who lost his life after a landslide that occurred in the area.

The emergency occurred around 5:30 in the morning on Tuesday, June 18 in the San José district, after heavy rainfall that occurred in the area, as reported by Captain Luis Gonzalo Correa Restrepo, commander of the Andes Fire Department. .

Immediately, both the Firefighters and the risk management personnel arrived at the scene and began their work to address the case. In addition, they had to wait for the yellow machinery to arrive to remove the material that fell on the road, which left several paths cut off since this corridor connects the urban area of Andes with the neighboring municipality of Pueblorrico.

One of the actions carried out was the recovery of the body of Arango, a civic and community leader who, apparently, had been on the road since early in the morning. The body was transferred to the municipal morgue to carry out the corresponding procedures.

According to information from the local media Conexión Sur, “the victim was sending an (audio) message related to the collection of water and greeted (it was recorded) other people, which suggests the possibility that there are other citizens trapped in the place, although this fact has not been confirmed.”

This tragedy joins others that occurred in the department during the rainy season. According to Carlos Ríos, director of the Administrative Department of Risk Management of Antioquia (Dagran), as of Monday, June 17, there had been seven deaths due to events related to heavy rains and 70,000 victims from the same cause.

Another tragedy after heavy rains occurred on Monday, June 10, in Medellín, causing flooding in several areas of the city. In the Manrique neighborhood, Las Granjas sector, a couple of motorcyclists were swept away by the current of an overflowing stream.

“Leave her, let her go,” some residents shouted as the motorcyclist tried to recover his vehicle, an action he only achieved with the help of five people.

In recordings broadcast on social networks, locals are heard criticizing the city’s drainage system. “This is very dangerous,” commented one resident, while others expressed concern about the accumulation of garbage and its impact on drains. With Infobae
