Members of the Chair of Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure participated in talks and witnessed the beginning of two oral trials.

Students belonging to the chairs of Criminal Law – taught by Professor Andrés Benavides – and Criminal Procedural Law – taught by academics Javier Rojas-Mery, Felipe Gorigoitía and Enrique Letelier – made an academic visit to the Criminal Oral Trial Court of Valparaiso.

The objective of the activity was to learn more about the practice of the profession in the criminal field, and to verify in situ the importance of litigation skills and knowledge of Procedural and Criminal Law.

The group of students was accompanied by Professor Javier Rojas-Mery, and during the day they first attended a presentation by Héctor Cartagena, head of the Public Attention Unit of the Oral Criminal Trial Court of Valparaíso, who made reference to the functions of the Court and other relevant aspects, and then offer a tour of the facilities.

Subsequently, the group was part of a talk led by Irene Cofré, head of Witnesses and Experts of the Oral Criminal Trial Court of Valparaíso, where the professional guided them on remote statements by minors and other related topics. .

Finally, the students witnessed the beginning of two oral trials, and then exchanged ideas and questions with the judges of the Valparaíso Criminal Oral Trial Court, among which were Marcela Osorio and Claudio Martínez, former students of the Law School. from the University of Valparaiso.

Professor Javier Rojas-Mery explained in the activity that “without a doubt, observing in practice what is learned in classes allows students to understand in a more attractive way—pedagogically speaking—the regulations and their significance or importance.”
