With the challenge of reinforcing the recovery of areas damaged by fires and the commitment to guarantee the roundwood necessary for tobacco infrastructure, workers in the agroforestry sector celebrate their day, this June 21.

According to Roger Piñero Rodríguez, coordinator of the Agroforestry Group in Pinar del Río, some 1,572.7 hectares of forests suffered the impact of the fires, which is why they readjusted the planting plan in the five companies in the province, while maintaining the country’s strategy of planting more than what is cut down.

He noted that, since last April and until next January 31, they have a commitment to provide more than one million pieces of round wood for the construction of some 3,000 tobacco houses for the upcoming campaign.

Piñero Rodríguez explained that despite the situation of energy carriers, one of the main difficulties of the sector in achieving compliance with the indicators, they have guaranteed sawn wood for the housing program and the making of sarcophagi. At the end of May this indicator was at 36 percent.

During the provincial event for the anniversary, held at the La Palma Agroforestry Company, recognition was given to the UEB La Jagua, for being the most comprehensive in the emulation of Forestry Worker’s Day.

Likewise, the work of 12 workers from different entities was recognized and eight Álvaro Barba Machado distinctions were awarded.

Pinar del Río currently has a covered area of 411,103.9 hectares, and continues to be the province with the greatest weight in forestry activity, as it must contribute 60 percent of the wood for the different programs in the country.
