On December 18, 2021, Margarita Gómez Márquez, a 25-year-old girl who was six months pregnant, disappeared in Barranquilla (Atlántico); On December 19, they found her body in the Sinaí trail, located in the municipality of Galapa. Two and a half years after what happened, the family of the victim of what would be an alleged femicide still does not have access to justice. Well, the main suspect in the young woman’s murder, identified as Beto Sánchez, has not been found by the authorities.

Janeth Márquez, mother of Margarita Gómez, assured, in conversation with Caracol Newsthat the investigation into the murder of his daughter has not moveddespite the fact that more than two years have passed since then, and that, in the meantime, the man accused of having committed the crime continues to enjoy full freedom, without answering for his actions.

“Justice has done nothing. Until now, I think, for me, that it is a lack of will. He is free, doing his thing, I don’t know where he is, because we have lost all trace of that individual. But, I know that there is no escape from divine justice,” the victim’s mother assured the media, in an interview given on June 20, 2024. She was wearing a T-shirt with a photo of her daughter and a sign on the one that demands justice for the “atrocious feminicide” of Margarita Gómez and her baby Sara.

The problem of impunity regarding cases of feminicide in Colombia persists. According to data provided in the gender-based violence report Living Without Fear from the Peace and Reconciliation Foundation (Pares), for the period 2022-2023, investigations into alleged femicides are slow. By then, more than 50% of the cases were in the investigation phase and 8.6% in the investigation phase. For its part, another 47.3% were in the trial stage and only 7.3% were already serving sentences..

In 2021, Janeth Márquez told the local media Your Boat the last thing he heard about his daughter before she disappeared. On December 18, she left her house after 6:00 pm, and an InDrive driver was waiting outside to take her, supposedly, to the home of a friend of hers.

“She gets in the car and leaves, and we are innocent of everything. She had told me that she was going to stay with a friend named Neider (sic). When she left the house, at 7:00 pm, that phone was completely turned off. So, since she didn’t answer me, I woke up all night, dialed her, she didn’t answer.“, the victim’s mother told the aforementioned media outlet.

The next day, he contacted Neider in order to find out about his daughter’s whereabouts, but the young man assured that he knew nothing about her. For her part, Janeth Márquez’s son-in-law spoke with Beto Sánchez, the suspect, who confirmed that he had an appointment with the young woman, but that she never arrived.

Then, a poster began to be spread with her photo and her characteristics so that those who might have seen her could report her whereabouts. However, that did not happen. On the morning of December 19, they found her body in Galapa; She had a blow to the face and two bullet wounds, one of them to the head.

The suspect in the crime would be the father of the baby that Margarita Gómez was expecting. “She was pregnant by a certain Beto Sánchez, that man, since he found out that my daughter was pregnant, he told her to abortwho did not want that child to be born and he pressured her on the phone and she was always saying the same thing,” Janeth Márquez said at the time.
