With the aim of strengthening the textile crafts sector of the province, the Government of Chubut carried out training in Mapuche Loom and Working in Gualjaina.

The activity took place over three days in the Community Hall of that town and was coordinated by the Undersecretariat of Culture of Chubut and the General Directorate of Cultural Industries, together with the Tourism and Culture Coordination of the Municipality of Gualjaina.

The call was a complete success, since more than 25 people participated, who enjoyed and learned from the hand of the textile artisan, Irma Nahuelán, from the city of Esquel, thus valuing ancestral knowledge of our culture so that it continues. alive through new generations.

The working technique, which allows “drawing” on the fabric, is used in sashes, table runners, ponchos and other pieces where some characteristic of the owner of the garment is traditionally symbolized.

To make the drawings it is necessary to change the positions of the threads as the Mapuche loom progresses.

Each fabric contains a story, an inheritance, a legacy, stories that the artisan tells when weaving. A plot loaded with knowledge, symbolic drawings that synthesize situations, emotions, animals or plants in the environment, among other aspects; which allows a fabric to be interpreted as an open book.
