President Gustavo Petro was in Popayán in the middle of an event called ‘Mission Cauca’with this he hopes to carry out, together with the Minister of Defense and local authorities, a series of initiatives with which they hope to transform the territory and guarantee security. so that the comprehensive development of the region is allowed. According to reports, the ‘Cauca Mission’ is part of the National Development Plan and will be to carry out a coordinated intervention between the State and the community, with support from the private sector.
This strategy covers economic, productive, cultural and social aspects with the aim of building a more just and inclusive society in Cauca. This initiative focuses on strengthening military and police operations to neutralize armed groups and illicit economies related to drug trafficking, illegal mining and extortion. “I have a proposal: public works in areas, we will call them conflict zones, which in reality are zones of illicit economy, must be carried out by the State itself. They cannot be hired. If not, that is condemned to doing nothing. The State itself, through its instruments“said the president.
Due to the context of the meeting, the victims of the conflict attended with the hope of being heard and receiving effective solutions to their difficult security situation, but this was not possible. The meeting was getting longer and longer and the president was dwelling on issues that had little to do with security in Cauca.Furthermore, at one point they saw that President Petro, without prior notice, began to say goodbye and leave the premises.
The victims began to shout out to be heard by the president, demanding solutions to their safety and the situation of the department. Spirits began to rise but President Petro ignored the cries of the victims, who in the midst of despair at being ignored began to boo the president.. In several videos broadcast on social networks you can see the moment in which the president leaves amidst screams, but without paying much attention.
