EPM and the University of Córdoba will install a radiometry device on some 6,000 fish to establish the migratory routes in the Cauca River and the impact generated by the Hidroituango project.
The installation of the chips will allow EPM to implement conservation measures for fish that are at risk due to activities such as fishing or pollution in the Cauca River basin. Likewise, the project seeks to establish migratory routes through which fish move.
“We are talking about bocachico and striped catfish, they are two fish of considerable commercial importance and let us say that with these activities we guarantee the effects of hydroituango and other economic activities that are developed in these sensitive areas for the reproduction of these fish” , explained Juan Fernando Morales, Ituango Environmental, Social and Sustainability director.
The system to be used in this project, which the University of Córdoba has also joined, is called radiometry, which consists of installing a device in the abdomen of the fish that in real time will provide information on the movement of the individual through the Cauca River.
“The transmitters emit a signal that is captured by radio receivers that are in fixed locations, one in Nechí and another in Cáceres, also in a boat, with this technique the movements of the fish are more precise,” indicated Víctor Atencio, professor at the University of Córdoba.
The project will benefit the 16 municipalities in the Hidroituango area of influence.
