a growing crisis – infopico.com

In a recent interview with INFOPICO.COM, Attorney General Armando Agüero addressed various issues related to security and the situation in the detention centers of La Pampa. During the conversation, critical points were touched on violence in prisons and police stations, the overpopulation of detainees and the evolution of certain crimes in the province.

Violence in detention centers

When asked about the repetition of acts of violence in mayor’s offices, prisons and police stations, Agüero confirmed that “there was one last weekend” but that the affected person “has already been discharged, in principle, although the wounds are sharp, they have a risk to life or it was not.” This situation reflects a worrying reality in the province related to overcrowding in detention facilities.

Overpopulation crisis

The Attorney General pointed out that overcrowding in prisons and police stations in La Pampa is a growing problem. According to Agüero, “there is a reality in the country, in the province of La Pampa and in general that has to do with the overpopulation of people detained in detention facilities.” This situation has worsened due to “the impossibility of them entering the prison service because it is collapsed,” which in turn “causes a collapse in the province of La Pampa.”

Agüero explained that the increase in prisonization is due to a faster criminal processing system: “Today you were sent to a moderately serious crime and you were detained and in 2 or 3 months you are sentenced, so by going fast the prisonization increases.” He compared the current situation with the past, mentioning that before there were “600 cases and you had 50 with detainees, today you have 600 cases and you have 150 with detainees,” which demonstrates a growth of more than 200% in prisonization.

Evolution of crimes

Regarding crimes, the Attorney General indicated that theft incidents have been constant, but that complaints of “scam and gender and child violence” have increased. He clarified that “we do not see a growth in robberies as alarming,” despite the economic crisis and the difficulties that could suggest an increase in this type of crime. Furthermore, he mentioned that the recent gun robberies are not related to generalized insecurity, but rather to “another type of commerce or to this type of activity or to other types of relationships.”
