Maria Velilla | Engineer: “At home they always encouraged me to study what I liked”

When María Velilla started Industrial Technical Engineering (in the Electricity branch) about 30 years ago, few women opted for a technical career. However, she found no obstacles in her environment. “They encouraged me from the beginning to do what I liked,” he congratulates himself. «Both my brother and I were educated equally and not because I was a woman did I have to settle for minor studies; “I liked the sciences and they encouraged me to study a technical career,” explains the woman from Rioja.

Vellila currently works in an electricity installation company and assures that she has “never” felt “undervalued” for being a woman in the workplace. “Of course, I have tried my best to do my job well,” she says.

The engineer also believes that the number of women in the engineering field will continue to increase in the coming years. “Although my sector is not one that attracts women very much,” she admits. «In any case, we are perfectly capable of reaching positions of responsibility; “any woman who wants to achieve them can do so,” she adds and then emphasizes the importance of meritocracy. She is a clear example that effort can be rewarded, regardless of the person’s sex.
