Córdoba pharmacies will become allies in the prevention and early detection of breast cancer in the provinceCORDOVA
The pharmacies of Cordova will collaborate in prevention and early detection of cancer breast in the province of Córdoba, offering information and advice on measures to detect possible signs or symptoms of this tumor, and advising on healthy lifestyle habits and physical exercise as tools to avoid it. In addition, they will encourage all those women who are at risk to join the breast cancer screening program of the public health system in Andalusia.
According to a note, with this objective, the Córdoba College of Pharmacists has hosted the course Care for patients with breast cancer in community pharmacy, a training action developed within the framework of the Health Campaign for Breast Cancer Screening in Pharmacies, promoted in collaboration with the Reina Sofía University Hospital and with the different health health districts of Córdoba, and in which the Córdoba pharmacies will participate together with health professionals involved in the diagnosis and treatment of this type of tumor.

The objective of this campaign, which began precisely with the course held at the College of Pharmacists, is to raise awareness among the population, especially women, of the importance of early detection and thus increase the participation of women in community breast cancer screening in the province.
The course has been taught by doctors and experts from the Reina Sofía hospital, and in it Nearly a hundred registered pharmacists from Cordoba have participated, who have been able to update and expand their knowledge about breast cancer, its main therapies and early detection techniques to contribute to its prevention from community pharmacy. Likewise, they have been able to improve their capabilities on this tumor to be able to develop a care role in order to guarantee the optimization of treatments and their safety in the continuity of care of the patients.
The course was inaugurated by Marina Álvarez, director of the Radiodiagnosis and Breast Cancer Unit of the Reina Sofía hospital; and the president of the College of Pharmacists of Córdoba, Rafael Casaño. The initiative included different presentations and talks by José Luis Raya, head of the Breast Section of the Radiodiagnosis and Breast Cancer Unit of the Reina Sofía hospital; Sara Romero, FEA of the Radiodiagnosis and Breast Cancer Unit; Pilar Rioja, FEA of General and Digestive Surgery; Juan de la Haba, FEA of Medical Oncology; and María Espinosa, FEA of Radiation Oncology.
Breast cancer screening program
In these sessions, issues such as the organization and results of the breast cancer screening program in the province of Córdoba, the diagnostic process in this type of tumors, surgery, and oncological and radiotherapy treatment.
Breast cancer is the most common malignant tumor in Andalusian women, and it is estimated that More than 6,000 women will be diagnosed with this tumor this year in the community. With the knowledge currently available, it is not possible to carry out measures to prevent the disease from appearing, but it can be detected in the early stages when it has not yet produced symptoms and, by applying appropriate treatment, improve the prognosis and increase the survival of the affected women. Hence the importance of improving comprehensive care for patients, for which collaborative, and if possible coordinated, practice of health professionals is necessary, involving pharmacists in any field of action in improving the responsible use of medicines and of public health, and in this case also in the work of prevention and early detection of breast cancer.
