César Gaviria once again delays the Liberal Convention: he moved it to October

César Gaviria, director of the party, once again rescheduled the date of the convention in which his permanence in office will be discussed. He has been procrastinating since last year. In April, after a series of complaints from dissident members and complaints to the National Electoral Council, CNE, and the Council of State, Gaviria had said that the convention was going to be in August.

But today, through an internal resolution, Gaviria established a new date: October 11. Some requirements to be able to participate in the convention were also modified. “Five hundred (500) delegates will be elected, of which two hundred and fifty (250) will be elected by direct vote and two hundred and fifty (250) will be elected in the departmental and Capital District Conventions,” the resolution says.

Gaviria wants to maintain control of the party. At the end of the Congressional sessions, several liberal senators and representatives received calls from the former president, probing the mood for an eventual re-election or the possibility of leaving an heir. The anti-gavirist voices of the party, among which are representative Juan Carlos Losada, have put up a fight.

Losada, in fact, nominated himself for the leadership of the party. Other congressmen are promoting the idea of a collegiate leadership, in which there are three senators and three representatives.

The definition of October, if that date is maintained, involves the selection of the more than 500 delegates.
