A woman gave birth to quadruplets in the Provincial Maternity of Córdoba, located in the provincial capital. Laura (1,300 kg), Angeline (1,425 kg), Victoria (1,370 kg) and Jordán (1,670 kg) were born prematurely this Monday at 6 p.m., according to local media.
The babies’ parents already had four other daughters, so now the family will have 10 members. “In my career I have not seen this type of multiple pregnancies when they occur spontaneously, but I have had the opportunity with assisted reproduction techniques. The parents of the quadruplets are originally from Trelew, Chubut, but they moved to Córdoba when they found out about the multifetal pregnancy for follow-up. The father even had to get a new job in the province.
The babies arrived via cesarean section at 30 weeks, which is the “average” gestation for this type of pregnancy, according to the doctor. “We hoped to reach 32 weeks, eight months, but we have not been able to achieve it. Labor started, the mother had a very large uterus and it made it very difficult for her to move. The three girls shared the placenta, each with her own amniotic sac, and the boy had his own placenta.”
To receive the four babies together, the Provincial Maternity Hospital had to reinforce its team made up of obstetricians, neonatologists, anesthetists and nurses. The number of doctors almost doubled, according to the director: “They did very well to come here, to a maternity hospital like this, which is currently among the largest in the country, if not the largest. “You have to put together a whole strategy, logistics.”
Despite being in good condition, the babies remain hospitalized in therapy due to their low weight. They will be in the incubator for a month and a half; The time will vary according to the evolution. “We think they will evolve well, but we know that there may be complications that force us to take other actions,” he explained, in dialogue with La Voz.
One of the babies has a malformation in a lung, but they clarified that it can be cured. The medical director indicated that she will be monitored because “many times it disappears on its own, but sometimes you have to do treatment.”
Meanwhile, the mother – identified as Erica Demetrio, 42 years old – is in mid-term therapy, accompanied by her partner: “The father is calm, but I think he has not yet been able to understand everything that is coming. “They are very happy.”
