The highest environmental authority in La Guajira and Cerrejon, in order to strengthen through environmental activities the recovery and conservation of the ecosystem services of the protective forest reserve Canaverals Springsigned an agreement with the Vigías Environmentales – Guardianes del Manantial foundation.
The agreement includes the development of training workshops on environmental education, induction into the regulations of protected areas, control and monitoring, conservation and management of native species, management and protection of fauna, prevention of forest fires, and project formulation.
Likewise, control and surveillance activities will be implemented in the Regional Protected Area to make monthly tours and collect sufficient and necessary information to execute biodiversity inventories.
Likewise, monitoring will be carried out and events such as fires, hunting, damage caused by cattle and deforestation will be reported to the environmental authority, in order to alert the environmental authority of the risk so that corrective measures can be taken.
According to the director of CorpoGuajira, Samuel Lanao Robles, this agreement is key because it involves the protection of one of the most strategic ecosystems of La Guajira. “The participation of the community in conservation management and of the guardians is important, who must continue with the drive to take care of the spring and thus continue guaranteeing the water that is used for human consumption and for productive activities.“, he pointed.
For its part, Luzmila Pintoleader of the area, said she was very grateful for the signing of this agreement and added that “The spring will no longer be alone and will have someone to care for and preserve it. We will give our soul to take care of it, so that it does not deteriorate as we have been doing for many years.”.
