For 14 years, the department of Huila has stood out as the country’s leading coffee producer (19.08% contribution to the national harvest in 2023), thanks to the dedicated work of coffee-growing families, and the articulation of inter-institutional efforts that contribute to the strengthening this important productive line.

With this purpose, the Huila Grande government during this first semester closed projects for more than $9.6 billion, aimed at strengthening the productive capacities of coffee-growing families, making coffee processing processes more efficient, and betting on value addition. through grain transformation.

The first project called “Implementation of technologies to strengthen the production, harvest, and post-harvest processes of coffee beans of small and medium-sized producers in the department of Huila”, will contribute to improving the productive capacities of 1,376 small and medium-sized coffee farmers in 20 Huila municipalities, also reducing the polluting impact through better management of water resources.

The second project called “installation of technology for the improvement of quality processes and generation of added value to coffee growing in the department of Huila”, with an investment of $5,751,764,977, will strengthen the competitiveness of the coffee subsector through the application of standards of quality in the agro-industrialization processes of the coffee bean, through the implementation of technologies in the harvest, post-harvest and Agroindustry stages of the coffee activity.

In addition to this million-dollar investment, joint work is being carried out with the National Federation of Coffee Growers, to contribute to the process of renewal of coffee plantations, soil correction, fertilization plans, and access to credit, all of this with the purpose to improve the productivity and profitability of this important subsector.

On the other hand, and thanks to the management of Governor Rodrigo Villalba Mosquera, it was possible to include Huila in a pilot for the implementation of Regulation 1115 EUDR, which will allow producers to prepare for the rule that requires that all coffee with destined for the European Union market, is produced with zero deforestation and forest degradation.

The projects don’t stop

But the commitment of the “Huila Grande” government to Huila coffee farming goes beyond these important actions. With a comprehensive development plan worth $5.2 billion that aims to strengthen the agricultural sector, specifically in pillar 5, called Alliance for a More Productive and Sustainable Rural Huila, made up of 7 programs, 36 products, and 39 indicators, The departmental organization is committed to the productive inclusion of small rural producers, financial services and risk management for agricultural and rural activities, social organization and productive use of rural territory, use of external markets, agricultural health and agri-food safety, science, technology and agricultural innovation, as well as productive and marketing infrastructure.

This special chapter for the Huila countryside, where coffee growing is a predominant actor, is complemented by other transversal programs promoted by the Government of Huila, which will undoubtedly contribute to improving security, tertiary routes, and the sustainability of productive activity in harmony with the environment, and facing climate change.

This ratifies the great commitment of the ‘Huila Grande’ government to the agricultural sector, where coffee growing is one of the most important productive bets due to its impact on the socioeconomic dynamics of the region.
