“A nobody wanted to become famous by humiliating César Rincón”

The president of Fedegán, José Félix Lafaurie, did not hide his annoyance with the decision of the mayor of Duitama, Boyacá, José Luis Bohórquez, to tear down the statue of the Colombian bullfighter César Rincón after the ban on bullfighting in the country, according to approved by Congress in this legislature.

Lafaurie also said that “they talk about inclusion and they are worse than the Taliban who enslave women and tear down statues because they do not conform to their biased and orthodox interpretation of Islamic law.”

The president of Fedegán did not mention the mayor of Duitama, but he clearly refers to him because he was the one who organized the act of toppling the statue in front of the bullring in that municipality. Furthermore, the renowned livestock businessman gave his opinion in response to a news article published by WEEK titled: “Mayor of Duitama, who led the toppling of the statue of César Rincón, faces provisional suspension from the Council of State.”

For Lafaurie, César Rincón “has done more for Colombia, for the economy and for livestock than all the ultra-orthodox animal rights activists who yesterday rejoiced at the demolition of his monument in Duitama. I hope they are shocked by the symbols of terrorism.”

This decision was not led by the Petro Government. In fact, the director of Social Prosperity, Gustavo Bolívar, told him WEEK that he opposed participating in that event and made this known to the mayor.

Teacher César Rincón rejected what happened. “There are no more adjectives,” he told WEEK.

For his part, Mayor José Luis Bohórquez defended himself. “My response to Mr. César Rincón: I respect all positions, we can improve. If there are discomforts in forms, there is room for reflection. But this is about postures. The debate is fundamental,” he expressed.
