Havana, Jun 27 (RHC) UN General Assembly (UNGA) President Dennis Francis arrived in Cuba on Thursday to review the country’s progress and contribution to multilateralism, cooperation, and ongoing regional and global challenges.

This was highlighted upon his arrival at the José Martí International Airport in the capital and indicated that his visit is part of the organization’s agenda to also examine the continued active commitment of the Caribbean nation, a country in the United Nations.

The President of the UNGA declared that we are living in very challenging times and underlined the intention of a very detailed and comprehensive exchange on additional measures that the UN must take in order to advance and execute meaningful actions in essential aspects such as the implementation of the Goals. Sustainable Development in Cuba.

He added that this will also pave the way for the Summit of the Future, which will be held in September 2024.

The UNGA president stressed that he has high expectations for the visit and hopes for its complete success.

Referring to the attempted coup d’état in Bolivia that took place on Wednesday, Francis reaffirmed that the UNGA advocates unrestricted respect for democracy and stability.

Upon his arrival, Francis was welcomed by the acting director of Multilateral Affairs and International Law of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ana Silvia Rodríguez.

According to the program announced by his office, the diplomat will meet with President Miguel Díaz-Canel, Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez and Vice Minister of Public Health Tania Margarita.

She will also hold discussions with the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Cuba, Francisco Pichón, and other members of the organization’s Country Team on the island, as well as with representatives of the Federation of Cuban Women.

Francis’ itinerary also includes a keynote conference in the Aula Magna of the University of Havana with the theme Cuba and multilateralism: opportunities and challenges, with the participation of government officials, members of the diplomatic community, representatives of youth, women leaders and academics.
