Fiber optic connectivity between the Amazon and Brazil is now a reality

This is a result of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the two nations last April during the visit to Colombia of the President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Bogota, June 28, 2024

In a phone call, the Minister of State for Communications of Brazil, Juscelino Filho, gave the good news to the ICT Minister, Mauricio Lizcano, about the arrival of the fiber optic cable that will connect Tabatinga (Brazil) with Leticia (Colombia) as of July 1, 2024.

This announcement is the result of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the two nations last April, within the framework of the visit to Colombia of the president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Thanks to the agreement signed by Minister Mauricio Lizcano and his Brazilian counterpart, Juscelino Filho, the subfluvial fiber optic cable that will link Tabatinga, in Brazil, with Leticia in the Colombian Amazon will arrive on July 1. This will allow the deployment of fiber optic Internet in the Amazon, significantly improving connectivity in the region.

“We are making the dream of thousands of Amazonian inhabitants come true, to have the connectivity they need and deserve. Thanks to a joint effort with Minister Juscelino Filho, we reached an agreement between Telebrás and Internexa to take fiber optics to Tabatinga, Brazil, and from there deploy it to Leticia. Today we can tell all Amazonians that, with this connection, high-speed Internet arrives that will solve the connectivity problem in this region, by expanding the coverage, quality and capacity of the backbone networks,” highlighted the ICT Minister, Mauricio Lizcano.

Once the optical fiber reaches Leticia, it is planned to connect, initially, 9,705 households of stratum 1 and 2 in the department of Amazonas, of which 8,547 will be in Leticia and 1,158 in Puerto Nariño. This will be done in partnership with the company Internexa, ensuring that the most vulnerable families are the first to benefit.

For the correct development of the project, a Technical Working Group will be created for the planning and analysis of the connection between the two cities. This group will be coordinated by the Telecommunications Secretariat of the Ministry of Communications of Brazil and the Vice Ministry of Connectivity of the ICT Ministry of Colombia. Both countries will be able to invite third parties to be part of this space, ensuring broad and effective collaboration.
