The Authority for the Supervision and Social Control of Forests and Lands (ABT) established periods of ban on controlled burning by region in order to better deal with the critical period of forest fires.

Luis Roberto Flores Orellana, executive director of the ABT, reported that, unlike other years, this time a consensus was reached regionalized prescribed burning schedule and periods, also by province, in which they are not allowed. In some areas the ban has been in effect since July.

The scheduling was worked on coordination with municipalities, producersfarmers and other sectors that have to do with these activities.

The schedule

In the provinces of Angel Sandóval, Cordillera, Florida, Obispo Santistevan and Warnes, the prohibition period of Controlled burning runs from July 1 to November 30.

In the Andrés Ibáñez province, in El Torno, prescribed burning cannot be carried out from June 15 to December 15 and, in the rest of the municipalities, from July 1 to November 30.

In the Sara province, in Santa Rosa del Sara, burning is suspended from August 1 to September 30 and In the rest of the municipalities, from July 1 to August 31.

In the provinces of Ichilo and Manuel María Caballero the ban is in effect from August 1 to August 30. September; in the provinces of German Busch and Ñuflo de Chávez, from August 1 to November 30, and in Vallegrande, from August 1 to October 31.

Damage

According to data from the ABT, between 2021 and 2023 forest fires consumed 5,025,992 hectares of forests and grasslands in the department of Santa Cruz.

Of the total burned area, 2,632,050 hectares were in protected areas and forest reserves.
