The Chilean team has a key match against Canada in the 2024 Copa América in just a few hours. Ricardo Gareca’s team must win to stay alive in the tournament, facing an opponent with whom it has a very short history of past encounters.

We say this because in the 129 years of history of the Chilean Football Federation, there have only been three matches against the Canadian national team. That’s right, in this Copa América 2024 it will only be the fourth duel with them.

The first of these matches took place on Wednesday, May 25, 1988 in Toronto, more specifically at Varsity Stadium, where 4,178 spectators watched the home team beat Chile 1-0.

On that day, under the direction of Orlando Aravena, La Roja took to the field with players such as Marco Cornez, Jaime Pizzarro, Hugo Rubio and Iván Zamorano. Unfortunately, these names could not prevent Ian Christopher Bridge’s goal at the last minute.

The second game dates back to Sunday 28 May 1995, when Xabier Azkargorta’s Reds won 2-1 at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton thanks to goals from Esteban Valencia (32′) and Marcelo Salas (87′). The Canadian goal was scored by Paolo Peschisolido (13′).

In 1995, a sort of revenge match would be played against the Canadians, being the last duel recorded between both teams. It was played at the Ester Roa in Concepción on Wednesday, October 11, and it was another Chilean victory for Azkargorta’s team, this time by 2-0, thanks to goals from Sebastián Rozental (47′) and Marcelo Salas (68′).

In the end, a short history of three games with two Chilean victories and one Canadian. It is hoped that after Saturday, La Roja’s dominance will continue and a qualification for this Copa América 2024 will be included.

When will Chile vs Canada play for the Copa América 2024?

Chile and Canada will play this Saturday, June 29th, starting at 8:00 p.m. (Chile time) at Exploria Stadium in Orlando. La Roja is obliged to win to qualify for the next round in the tournament.
