The Red faces Canada with the obligation to win to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Copa America 2024. The referee for the match this Saturday, June 29 at the Exploria Stadium will be Wilmar Roldanwho has a great controversy with Chile in his history.
The Colombian has refereed Chile on more than one occasion. He did so in the final of the 2015 Copa América. He also refereed the match against Peru at the Monumental in the current 2026 World Cup Qualifiers. However, the most bitter memory was in the Copa America 2021.
Roldán was the main protagonist of the controversial defeat against Paraguay in said competition. The Colombian took a dubious penalty in favor of Paraguay for a foul by Gary Medel and then rejected a handball by Paraguayan Carlos González inside the area. In Chile they didn’t want to see it.
In fact, this action motivated the Chilean Football Federation to send a letter to the CONMEBOL Referee Commission “to express its displeasure with the refereeing of the match between Chile and Paraguay, requesting the suspension of the refereeing team headed by Wilmar Roldán.”
