The big title missing from the palmares of Novak Djokovic is the gold medal in the Olympic Games, a title that slipped away from him in the last edition of the world’s biggest sporting event when he came close to victory against the German, Alexander Zverev, in Tokyo 2021.
The Belgrade native was leading by a set and a break against the German in the semi-final duel held in Japan, but the Balkan player disconnected for the return of the German, who took the victory by 1-6, 6-3 and 6-1.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion would compete with the Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta for bronze, but the Iberian would take the victory, which he recalled in a recent interview with “Eurosport”.

“I was very focused from the beginning, knowing what I had to do and knowing that perhaps the defeat in the semifinals was going to affect him more than me because his goal was to win gold.
“He was going to the Olympic Games to win gold, which was the only thing he had left to do to complete his immense record,” Carreño Busta told Eurosport about a dejected Djokovic again at the Olympic Games after a tough defeat.
“I knew it was going to be tough for him mentally and it’s true that he started the match as if he wanted to go very fast, as if he wanted to say to himself: ‘Well, I’m the best, I’m going to win and that’s it, I’m going to get rid of this man quickly’,” added the Spanish tennis player.
