A polar wave is coming in AMBA: can it snow in CABA?

This weekend, the National Meteorological Service (SMN) predicted that a polar wave will take over the Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires (AMBA). Given this probability and taking into account the time of year, doubts grow: can it snow in CABA?

According to the official source, Saturday will show a minimum temperature of 3° with a maximum of 9°Meanwhile, the minimum temperature on Sunday will be just 2°, making it the coldest day so far this year.

But, given the enormous possibility and expectation of seeing snow in the Capital, they considered it again. What are the real chances of it snowing again as it did on July 9, 2007?

Cold alert, low temperatures, polar wave

It should be noted that for the phenomenon to occur certain factors must combine:

  • Cold air: Although low temperatures will be present, it is essential that this does not only occur on the surface but also in the upper layers of the atmosphere. To achieve this, the temperature reached must be equal to or below zero degrees.
  • Humidity: Another of the fundamental factors for snow in Buenos Aires is the presence of water vapor in the atmosphere for the formation of clouds and, subsequently, snow.
  • Precipitation: Finally, the clouds must be at a sufficiently low temperature so that the ice crystals do not melt before reaching the ground. This will produce precipitation in the form of snow.

Faced with this situation, experts say it. The spokesperson for the National Meteorological Service anticipated that there is “a chance of snow on the southern coast of Buenos Aires“.
