Tremor in Colombia today, Saturday, June 29, 2024: latest earthquakes reported by the SGC

According to the Colombian Geological Service (SGC), The Nevado del Ruiz, Galeras and Puracé volcanoes are some of the most active and monitored in the country due to their history of eruptions and tectonic movements.

SGC indicated an increase in the frequency and magnitude of earthquakes in the area of the Galeras volcano, located in the department of Nariño. This volcano, which has had significant historical eruptions, showed a pattern of low-magnitude earthquakes that, according to experts, could be precursors of future eruptive activity.

In the southwest of the country, the Puracé volcano has recorded a series of earthquakes that can be felt by local communities. For this reason, The SGC frequently issues early warnings to the nearby population, recommending being prepared for possible eruptive events.

Meanwhile, Nevado del Ruiz is one of the most active volcanoes in terms of telluric movements. This seismic activity is not only associated with volcanic activity itself, but also with the interaction of the Nazca and Suramericana tectonic plates.
