Havana, Jun 28 (Prensa Latina) Mongolia today contributed one million dollars to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in Cuba, aimed at supporting food security for vulnerable people and pregnant women.

The contribution will benefit about 50,000 people, including 2,900 pregnant women and more than 44,600 people in vulnerable situations in the central provinces of Villa Clara and Cienfuegos, indicated the ambassador of this Asian nation in Cuba, Zoljargal Seseer. , during the official delivery of the donation.

For this, the WFP acquired 400 metric tons™ of rice, 107 mt of cooking oil and 250 mt of grains, the ambassador reported.

Seseer highlighted the close and historical ties of solidarity between both peoples, established since 1960 when Cuba became the first country on the American continent to establish diplomatic relations with Mongolia and which have been strengthened in recent years.

“The quality of a friend is known in difficult times, says a proverb, the ambassador highlighted and added “this humanitarian aid is an expression of the affectionate feelings of the Mongolian people dedicated to the Cuban people, who are going through complex social and economic times.”

It also marks a historic milestone, since it is one of the first times that this Asian nation donates funds to the organization here, reaffirming its international solidarity and its commitment to zero hunger, reported the WFP office in Cuba.

“This donation is part of WFP’s work to contribute to the country’s socio-economic recovery,” said WFP representative on the island, Etienne Labande.

Labande ratified the WFP’s commitment to supporting national authorities to promote the consumption of nutritious foods in vulnerable groups.

For her part, the general director of Cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Trade, Alba Rosa Alarcón, expressed gratitude on behalf of the people and government of Cuba for the contribution.

He highlighted the efforts of this Asian nation in favor of food in Cuba and indicated that deliveries of the first cycle of the module have already been made.

He pointed out that in the complex situation, aggravated by the intensification of the economic, commercial and financial blockade of the United States against Cuba and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, this gesture of brotherhood constitutes an unprecedented fact, which enriches the values ​​that cement bilateral relations.

Food will be distributed through local stores as part of the standard family food basket.
