The “Mad Max” franchise is a series of post-apocalyptic action films created by the director George Miller. The Mad Max saga began in 1979 and launched stardom Mel Gibson. The first film, “Mad Max” (1979), sets up a dystopian world where Max Rockatansky, a police officer, seeks revenge after a motorcycle gang murders his family.

The sequel, “Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior” (1981), follows Max in a desolate world, where he helps a group of survivors defend themselves against a band of looters.

In “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome” (1985), Max encounters a community in the desert and faces challenges in the Thunderdome arena. “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2015) follows Max and Furiosa in a frantic race across the desert to escape a tyrant. The franchise has also inspired comics, video games and novels.

“Furiosa: From the Mad Max Saga” explores the origins of the heroine who appeared in “Furious Road,” an Oscar-winning film with Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy.

Anya Taylor-Joyknown for the series “The Queen’s Gambit”, plays the young Furiosa in this prequel, who, captured by a horde of motorcyclists led by the warlord Dementus, will try to find her way back home.

“The idea of ​​this prequel has been floating around in my head for more than ten years,” said George Miller, quoted in the organizers’ statement. “I am delighted to return to the Cannes Film Festival, with Anya, Chris and Tom. There is no better place than the Croisette to discover this film with the public,” highlighted the Australian film director.

George Miller was president of the Cannes Film Festival in 2016. In 2022 he presented “Three Thousand Years Waiting for You” out of competition, with Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba.
