Mexico City.– The documentary State of Silence, directed by Santiago Maza and produced by the production company of Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal, will premiere at the Tribeca International Film Festival.

Through a statement, La Corriente del Golfo, name of the production company, detailed that the film work will be present at the film festival in the “Spotlight+” section, where it will show the audience a portrait of the violence faced by those dedicated to independent journalism. in Mexico.

“In a country like Mexico, where impunity reaches alarming levels, journalism becomes a fundamental pillar. It is independent journalism that guides us towards the truth. Today I can affirm that my citizen conscience has been forged largely thanks to tireless work and courage of the journalistic union of my country, from there comes my concern and indignation for the conditions in which they carry out their work and the creation of this documentary as a tool to denounce this situation,” Diego Luna commented on the documentary.

For Maza, this work is done out of respect for the journalist’s profession, showing the dark side they face in the country.

“As a documentary filmmaker, I have always had great respect for journalists. Their work shapes us. It allows us to understand the world and many times we act or think from their interpretation of events. In Mexico, the mistreatment of journalists happens at too many levels, from the discredit that the profession suffers today and even the most lethal consequence. That they pay with their lives for their commitment to the truth is unacceptable,” the director explained in the statement.

The Tribeca Film Festival will take place from June 5 to 16 in New York, where a panel will also be held to talk about the theme of the documentary, with the presence of its protagonists, in addition to Santiago Maza, Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal.

According to the statement, State of Silence “follows the lives of four journalists in Mexico who have become targets of repression for sharing and exposing the reality in their communities. This portrait exclaims with a sense of urgency that freedom of the press cannot remain under siege”.

The director concluded that the documentary arose from evidence that exposes the inaction of the Mexican government, which continues to be presented despite changes in administration.

“The documentary highlights the inaction and denial of the Mexican government in the face of this crisis. Various administrations have passed and the problem only gets worse.

“Journalists are covering their own deaths. Premiering this documentary at a festival like Tribeca is the opportunity and the starting point to raise the volume of this discussion with the intention that politicians and the mass media business community finally commit to it.” to address the problem,” concluded the director.

After passing through Tribeca, Estado de Silencio will tour at various international festivals. It was produced by Abril López Carrillo and the executive producers are Diego Luna, Santiago Maza, Gael García Bernal and Joris Debeij.
