We have Liam Neeson’s best work in years right around the corner, but we Spaniards will have to wait patiently for its arrival in theaters. The title in question is In the land of saints and sinners and, although at least we know that Vértice is behind it and that he wants to release it as much as the fans do to see it, the truth is that It was going to be released on May 1, but, after the delay, it still does not have a release date.
In the land of saints and sinners is an action thriller with all the Western essence that takes place in Ireland in the 70s. It focuses on Finbar Murphy, a man who lives a quiet life in a remote coastal town called Glen Colm Cille. The country is experiencing a wave of violence, but Murphy manages to stay out of it. This ends when a terrorist group led by a woman named Doirean appears.
Murphy turns out to be a retired murderer who has achieved redemption by living in Glen Colm Cille, but now that he has been found he will have to reveal his true identity and fight again. This time to do justice.
The film directed by Robet Lorenz has almost unanimous support from critics and the public. In fact, it’s some of his best work in years. Neeson’s filmography is not always synonymous with quality and he has been chaining together several mediocre feature films for some time. In the land of saints and sinners breaks this streak and accumulates 83% in Rotten Tomatoes by the specialized press -The viewers give it a fairly decent 75%-.
Those who have already been able to see it – it was presented at the Venice Film Festival and in countries such as the United States it was released in March – have shared their enthusiasm. “A great homecoming for Neeson in a role that suits him much better than his recent typecasting in Hollywood action“, writes a user in Letterboxd, “It’s pretty tough sometimes too. Much better than I expected.” Similar to what another writes in the film’s profile: “Liam Neeson’s best film in years. A thoughtful and slow action drama (at best) that features great work from a ruthless Kerry Condon.”
To find similar evaluations we have to go back to 2019, when it premiered Eternally in love, a romantic drama starring opposite Lesley Manville that tells how a veteran couple faces a breast cancer diagnosis. A role in which we are not used to seeing him and which, however, brings a little air to a career full of disposable action films.
