Andy Serkis will direct and star in this reunion with one of the most charismatic characters in the franchise created by JRR Tolkien. It will be in the film ‘The Hunt for Gollum’, which Warner has announced in its communication to shareholders of the results for the first quarter of the year. Peter Jackson, director of the original trilogy and the films that adapted ‘The Hobbit’, will be in charge of production.

To ensure that there isn’t another fiasco like ‘The Hobbit’, which started with Guillermo del Toro on board, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav has assured that Jackson “will be involved every step of the way.” Peter Jackson will be accompanied by his usual partners, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens.

In fact, it is Walsh and Boyens themselves who will be in charge of developing the script, helped by Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou (who have also written ‘Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim’, so Warner must be happy with how goes this last). According to Warner, they are still in a very primitive phase of workand Zaslav states that “they will explore stories that have not yet been told”, so it is possible to think that we are facing something similar to a prequel that will investigate the origins of the character.

Warner announced just a few months ago that they were going to develop a series of films based on Tolkien’s books through the New Line Cinema label, owned by Warner and producer of the original trilogy at the time. The rights have been licensed from Embracer, current owner of the rights to The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit since August 2022.
