At Marvel Studios they knew that everyone remembers Lauren Fishburne for her role as Morpheus in The Matrix, but they didn’t want to forget Neil Gaiman either.

Regardless of the quality or how fun the Marvel Studios movieseach and every one of them are a real feast for reference hunters and Easter eggs. This phenomenon is not an exception in Ant-Man and the Waspa film that, aware that its cast includes one of the leading actors of one of the most important films and with the greatest cultural impact in history, did not hesitate to make a nod to The Matrix with an extra punch.
“The Matrix is everywhere”
If you’re an avid watcher, pausing Ant-Man and the Wasp in the minute 33:09, you’ll come across a surprising detail that pays homage to the iconic sci-fi film starring Keanu Reeves and Laurence Fishburne. In this scene, the character Dr. Bill Foster, played by Fishburne, is giving a lecture in a university classroom. Behind him, on the blackboard, you can see the word “matrix” written between a bunch of equations complex mathematics. This seemingly trivial detail is actually a clever and double wink on the part of Marvel Studios, connecting in a subtle and elegant way with The Matrix saga.
But there’s more: It turns out that the relationship between Laurence Fishburne and the word “matrix” goes beyond its role in those of the Wachowski sisters. According to writer Neil Gaiman, Fishburne was inspired by his portrayal of Morpheus to create his own Morpheus character in the Sandman comics. This fact was revealed when Warner Bros. contacted Gaiman to help promote The Matrix. Gaiman, inspired in turn by the film, wrote a short story titled “Goliath” which was illustrated by Bill Sienkiewicz.
Thus the blackboard in the conference scene not only contains the word “matrix” as a reference to his role in The Matrix, but It is also a tribute to the character Goliath, the character from the Marvel comics on which the character Fishburne plays is based in this film, brilliantly connecting both universes in a single detail.
