The prequel to the successful franchise that mixes horror and science fiction is released in theaters, this time starring Lupita Nyong’o.
Six years after the release of John Krasinski’s monstrous sci-fi film, its prequel is now coming to theaters: A Quiet Place: Day One. The first installment was a pretty terrifying film, which elevated its director – seasoned mainly in comedy – to one of the names to be reckoned with in the genre. The second installment takes place mostly after the original, but also reveals in its first part what happened on the first day of the alien invasion. After the first film began on day 89 of the alien invasion and the second part on day 474, the third installment returns to the beginning, changing the country setting for New York. Krasinski has handed over the baton to writer and director Michael Sarnoski, responsible for the acclaimed Nicolas Cage film: Pig. The director gives us a fast-paced prequel that combines emotional depth and high doses of suspense.
This time, the center of the story is Samira (Lupita Nyong’o), a terminally ill cancer patient who visits the city with her hospital companions to attend a puppet show. When the aliens attack, the first act is the most intense we have seen in the franchise, with Sarnoski setting up an impressive carnage with hints of 9/11 and with the protagonist hiding under the carswith wide-eyed panic shining in a face covered in dust, as asteroids land and aliens with deaf hearing prowl around them.

After such a peculiar debut as Pig, it doesn’t seem like directing a prequel to a franchise is the most logical next step in your career, however the filmmaker manages to bring a large part of his sensitivity to the saga. Part of this is due to the very nature of the prequel: starting from the relative freedom to build new characters and stories, all of this added to Sarnoski’s ability to draw deep emotions from his stars and audiences Almost immediately.
