A great career, a broken mind

His life was full of ups and downs since, despite achieving notable success with Nirvana, was characterized by an inconstant period of misery, depression and suicidal tendencies. She did not accept fame as a way of life and the popularity she enjoyed was a real inconvenience in her daily life.

In an interview for the BBC (via Ultimate Classic Rock), Dave Grohl, Nirvana drummer and current leader of Foo Fightersremembered the days after Kurt’s death like this:

“I didn’t really have a plan. When everything turns around and shakes like this, you wake up every day thinking: ‘Who am I? Where I am? What am I doing’. I remember the day after Kurt died, how strange it felt to wake up knowing that he was no longer with us and that I, however, had one more day. Like, okay, what am I going to do with him now?”

“I think when I thought about that, I started to realize, ‘Oh, okay, you have to do it all over again.’ I mean I had to make my coffee and it was the first one I was going to drink since Kurt died. I have to go upstairs and get dressed. This is the first thing I’m going to wear since Kurt died. I continued like this the entire time. “Honestly, I don’t know what I did, but it was a process that lasted months.”

Then, Grohl had to face creating a new solo project, Foo Fighters, which, although successful, was not without problems. “I know I don’t sound good, but how do I look? How do I hold my guitar? How I do this? How do I move? I was never in the moment. He was very afraid. And then something changed. There was a moment when I said to myself: ‘You know what? I’m not going to waste any more time being nervous or scared to death. “I’m going to go out there like I’m fucking Julius Caesar.”

He went from being the janitor at his high school – living in misery and sleeping under a bridge or in his own car – to a music legend. an idea that he rejected to become a simple secondary musician. However, that attitude clashed with what his former manager described in Nirvana, who stated that he worked very hard to achieve fame and that he was involved in all the details that involved the group, from designing t-shirts to keeping an eye on the airing of their music videos on MTV. And that was the charm of the artist, that duality that made him a unique personality and that we miss so much.

During the last stage of his life he struggled with depression, illness, and his addiction to heroin. This added to the difficulty of coping with fame, professional and personal pressures – remember that his wife was the singer-songwriter Courtney Love– They led him to commit suicide in his home in Seattle, where he carried out one of the threats that he had already processed in a previous and failed suicide note, where he expressed “I choose death”.
