Imagine a young man Bruce Dickinson perplexedly attending a concert Iron Maiden It is something complicated after so many decades of history in which his voice has become one of the characteristic hallmarks of the band, but before joining those of Steve Harristhe vocalist remembers what it was like to see those first Maiden, the comparison he made between them and his admired Deep Purple and that his then singer, Paul Di’Anno, “He didn’t have much flexibility in his voice.”

These words have been captured in the interview given by Dickinson to Record Collectorin which he begins by taking us to Camden to relive with him his memory of the first time he saw Iron Maiden live: “The first time I saw Maiden was at the then Music Machine in Camden. Samson were headlining because our manager had financed the gig and said, ‘We want first place’, even though we didn’t really deserve it.

That became evident when Maiden appeared, because the entire venue was packed. I had heard rumors about how good they were and thought I’d better see them. When they came out, I thought, ‘I’ve never seen Deep Purple, but this is what it must have felt like to see Deep Purple at their best, rocking out.'”

After this first impression, Bruce answers the question about what he thought of the then vocalist, Paul Di’Anno: “He was fine, but he didn’t have a lot of flexibility in his voice. It seemed to me that his voice had already gone as far as it could go. I quickly saw what the rest of the band was capable of and I remember thinking, ‘Oh my God, I would love to lead.’ that group. And as soon as they finished playing, everyone in the place left and we were headlining for about three people.”
