The general director of the Latin Recording Academy, Manuel Abudopened the door to, in the future, Mexico host the Latin Grammy Awards gala, awards that this 2024, on their 25th anniversary, will be held in Miami (United States).

Asked if the country could be a future headquarters of the awards organized by the academy, Abud responded: “of course.”

“We wanted Seville (in Spain and headquarters of the 2023 edition) is not an experiment or a field day, but is part of an entire international development strategy of the academy,” he explained.

He revealed that, by 2025, different cities mexican and other countries, without revealing more details, have already shown interest in hosting the celebration.

“Let’s start with a process much more formal with the idea that, probably next year, but, if not, surely the next, to leave (the US) again,” Abud stressed, who highlighted the need for “several factors”, such as the existence of the necessary infrastructure and the availability of the venues.

This possibility opens the year in which the Latin Grammy introduce a new category dedicated to rewarding the best album of contemporary Mexican regional music, which has recently experienced a “spectacular” evolution.

In this sense, these creations were “difficult” to fit into one of the “traditional categories” of Mexican music, so the academy chose to dedicate a specific one to them.

“So that we let’s add “A category goes through a whole process that sometimes takes more than a year because we want to be sure (…) that there is enough attendance for a new category before launching it,” he said.
Rejects “moralistic position” in the selection

On the other hand, the general director of the awards given by the Latin Recording Academy He rejected a “moralistic position” when selecting the winning creations.

To questions from the press about the controversial runs lying down Mexicans, a musical subgenre with lyrics that advocate different crimes, such as drug trafficking, assured that, from the academy, “musical excellence is recognized.”

“Maybe many years ago someone wouldn’t have liked a nude in a paint and yet, there were avant-garde artists who respected it and left it,” he compared, although he stressed the need to “be careful.”

He ruled out “any type of censorship” and advocated respect for the selection process carried out by the members of the academy – about 5 thousand members – and under the supervision of the management, which ensures a “cleanest and neatest possible” procedure.

“The process of selection It is not perfect, but it works because (…) the majority of members are going to feel offended, upset or attacked by a situation like the one you mention and will not automatically vote for it. “It has a natural self-correction,” he explained.

About the future of Latin GrammyAbud stressed the importance of “staying current” in line with the evolution of artists, as well as the “support” they provide them on this path.

“This issue of continuing to advance in presence internationalFor me, it is very important, a fundamental part of the future of the academy and the celebration of Latin music,” he concluded.
