Toto’s Steve Lukather attacks Weezer and their cover of “Africa” — Futuro Chile

Toto has a history of almost half a century. And one of his greatest achievements is “Toto IV”, which has the classic single “Africa”, a success for the AOR legend and which even obtained covers from other groups over time.

Several years later, and after many requests from their fans, Weezer decided to cover this song. At the time, the decision was controversial, especially because initially, faced with the incessant requests of their fans, Rivers Cuomo’s group opted to cover “Rosanna” first. Later, when they released their cover of “Africa”, it became a resounding success in 2919.

What does Toto’s Steve Lukather think about Weezer?

In an interview with Colombia’s Radioacktiva, Steve Lukather revealed some of the events surrounding Toto’s success, and even gave his opinion on Weezer’s cover.

“Their version is like… All they did was put power chords over a very weak rhythm, but if they actually listened to our album in detail they would notice everything they missed,” Lukather said.

The guitarist even assured that Weezer tried to take this version completely lightly. “They thought they were going to do it as a joke and throw it out there to make fun of us or whatever. They don’t like us, they don’t respect us, they’re chord punk guys who have high school level musical skills, but it was a big hit for them. “They thought they were trying to mess with us, but it bounced back and revived their dying career,” Lukather explained.

In the midst of this, the artist even explained that he had a problem with Weezer. «I tried to approach their singer (Rivers Cuomo). He refused to talk, so I said ‘little brat, I’m going to punch him in the face the next time I see him. You know, I said, ungrateful asshole, really? You think you’re better than me?’» the musician said.

But, despite this, Steve Lukather made it clear that he has nothing against Weezer: “I don’t hate Weezer, they just disrespected us, so you know what? It’s okay, guys, you’re the best,” concluded the member of Toto, who we will see on Wednesday, November 20 at the Movistar Arena.
