This inevitably sparked much speculation on the Internet about the real identities of some of the figures given fictitious names on the show, and while Richard Gaddwho wrote the show based on his own previous experience of being stalked, and stars as the main protagonist ‘Donny’ – has asked that people not try to find out who they really are, the woman identified as the real-life ‘Martha’ now has spoken out to say that he has received death threats and abuse from Gadd’s followers.

What the real-life “Baby Reindeer” stalker said about the Netflix series

The woman, whom the Daily Mail interviewed without revealing her name, told the newspaper that she believes Gadd is “bullying an older woman to gain fame and fortune.” She is quoted as saying: “Now he’s using Baby Reindeer to stalk me. I am the victim. She’s written a damn show about me”.

The woman, who denied to the newspaper that she was Gadd’s stalker, accused him of having “main character syndrome” and questioned aspects of the drama:

“I’ve never owned a baby reindeer toy and I wouldn’t have had a conversation with Richard Gadd about a child’s toy either.”

Gadd has revealed that, more than four and a half years ago, he received 41,071 emails, 744 tweets, letters totaling 106 pages and 350 hours of voicemails from an elderly woman, played by Jessica Gunning on the hit show. The woman said: “She looks a bit like me after I gained four kilos during lockdown, but I’m not actually unattractive”.

Both Gadd and Gunning have urged viewers not to try to guess the identities of people in Reindeer Baby, with Gadd writing on Instagram: “That’s not the goal of the program.”.
