Havana, May 3 (RHC) Amnesty International (AI) expressed in the United States its condemnation of the police repression against pro-Palestinian demonstrations in universities in the northern nation in recent weeks.
Paul O’Brien, executive director of that global movement that works for the promotion and defense of human rights, declared: “We urge university administrations to safeguard and facilitate the right of students to protest or carry out counter-protests in a manner peaceful and safe on its campuses.”
AI noted that, while some universities agreed to dialogue with students, many others turned to security forces, using a variety of “violent” methods to repress “peaceful” protests in support of the Palestinian cause, such as stun grenades, bullets rubber or tear gas.
“The NYPD expressly prevented the media, including journalism students, legal observers and doctors, from playing their role in observing these actions, threatening them with arrest if they did not leave the area,” said O’Brien.
The NGO also stated that the authorities did not take “adequate measures to protect protesters from violence from third parties, such as at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).” (Source: HISPANTV)
