More fight for Olympic tickets in Istanbul qualifier

Havana.- CUBA will seek three places for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games during the world wrestling qualifier scheduled in Istanbul, Turkey, from May 9 to 12.

A Greek player and two women will try to expand the places in this sport to 13, after the 10 achieved between the 2023 world competition and the recent pre-Olympic competition in America.

Already at the tournament headquarters are the Greco player Daniel Grégorich (87 kg), Central Caribbean and Pan American champion, and the women Laura Herin (53 kg) and Yaynelis Sanz (57 kg), also experienced, chosen taking into account their state of form. and the possibilities of putting in outstanding performances and qualifying.

“The fight is tough, but we expect the best from each of them in the competition,” he told HIT Martín Torres Peguero, national commissioner of this sport.

The event on Turkish soil will be the last of the six with qualifying status towards Paris 2024. It will deliver 54 ballots in total, three in each weight division.

Therefore, the finalists of each division and the winner of an additional fight between the two bronze medalists will be registered in the event under the five rings. The battle is undoubtedly more demanding for those who enter through this last route.

When this contest ends, the 288 exponents of the fights will have been defined in the Olympic competition scheduled in the City of Light during the upcoming summer.

In the Greco-Roman style, the Cubans Kevin de Armas (60 kg), Luis Orta (67 kg), Yosvanys Peña (77 kg), Gabriel Rosillo (97 kg) and Mijaín López (130 kg) are already assured, the latter through the ticket won by Oscar Pino (130 kg).

In the women’s style, Milaymis Marín (76 kg) and Yusneylys Guzmán (50 kg) have quotas, and in the free style Alejandro Valdés (65 kg), Geandry Garzón (74 kg) and Arturo Silot (97 kg).

We are talking about a key sport in the Island’s aspirations to achieve a pleasant performance in Paris 2024, given the prominence of figures such as Orta, Rosillo and Mijaín, fundamentally.

The global spotlight for Mijaín, who will try to win his fifth consecutive crown at this level, something unparalleled in this sport. His preparation is going well and if it is not interrupted due to any discomfort, it should lead him to the high level and mastery that he has always exhibited in major competitions.
