Strict entomological and epidemiological surveillance exists in the Antofagasta region, regarding the eventual appearance of the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, assured the Seremi de Salud. This, with the purpose of early detecting the presence of the insect and preventing its reproduction.

The above, added Antofagasta Health Minister Jessica Bravo, is reflected in the weekly review of more than 100 traps located at strategic points along the coast.

The person explained that the traps – which are intended to early detect specimens that could enter the region – are located between Tocopilla and Coloso, covering ports and places of commercial importance, which also include Michilla, Mejillones and Antofagasta.

At the same time, and through its Epidemiology Unit, the Health Authority maintains strict surveillance regarding the eventual appearance of patients who could be affected by Dengue and who have been detected in a healthcare facility, in order to collect information that describes how they would have been affected. infected

Citizen participation

The authority highlighted that early detection and prevention of the appearance of Aedes Aegypti requires the support and active participation of citizens.

In this sense, the Ministry of Health highlighted the importance of avoiding the accumulation of water in the patio, vases and the accumulation of unused materials at home and in buildings in general.

Carrier of pathology

The authority explained that the aforementioned insect can be a carrier of serious pathologies such as Yellow Fever, Zika, Dengue and Chinkungunya, adding that it has not been found in the Antofagasta Region, although it has been found in the border countries.

Jessica Bravo commented that there are currently findings of Aedes Aegypti in Arica and Los Andes, although no pathogenic agents have been found in any of them.
