Díaz-Canel and Putin visit Castro monument in Moscow and share dinner

Miguel Díaz-Canel and Russian President Vladimir Putin visited the monument to Fidel Castro (1926-2016) in Moscow on Wednesday, as part of the official agenda carried out by the Cuban leader in Russia.

Invited to the Victory Day parade on May 9, Díaz-Canel attended today as an observer the summit of leaders of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).

“I would like to reiterate once again Cuba’s commitment to the development of mutually beneficial cooperation with the EAEU and its member states,” he said at a session of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council.

He also announced that the island intends to expand its participation “in the mechanisms of the union in order to achieve deeper integration” and improve the coordination of actions to give “improvement to joint projects in areas of mutual interest.”

“In this sense, it is imperative to stimulate a more systematic and practical interaction between sectoral ministries and commission institutions, as well as between member and observer states,” said Raúl Castro’s successor.

Later, Díaz-Canel attended an official dinner where he shared the table with the president of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon, the Kyrgyz president Sadyr Japarov, the Kazakh president Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko, the Turkmen president Serdar Berdimuhamedov, the Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and with Putin.

The invasion of Ukraine launched by Putin in 2022 triggered the worst rupture in relations between Russia and the West since the Cuban missile crisis of 1962, but the communist regime in Havana has remained a close ally of Russia.
