The Government reaffirmed the claim for the Malvinas before the UN: “The United Kingdom exercises an illegal occupation”

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Diana Mondinorenewed this Tuesday the claim for the Malvinas at the headquarters of the United Nations (UN), in the United States, and called for having a “mature” relationship with the United Kingdom.

The chancellor explained to the UN Special Committee on Decolonizationwhich reiterated through a new resolution the call to the United Kingdom and Argentina to resume bilateral negotiations to find, as soon as possible, “a peaceful and definitive solution” to the sovereignty dispute over the Malvinas Islands, South Georgia, the South Sandwich Islands and the surrounding maritime spaces”.

During the session, numerous delegations expressed their support for this call and Argentine sovereign rights in the issue of the Malvinas Islands, including interventions on behalf of States Parties and Associated States of Mercosur and the Brasilia Consensus. by Paraguay and Brazil, respectively.

In his speech, Mondino reaffirmed Argentina’s sovereignty rights over the Malvinas Islands, South Georgia Islands, South Sandwich Islands and the surrounding maritime spaces. and urged the United Kingdom to make the same commitment that our country maintains with the peaceful settlement of disputes, multilateralism and a rules-based international order, through compliance with its obligations regarding decolonization reflected in the relevant resolutions of the General Assembly and its Special Committee on Decolonization.

“191 years have already passed since the beginning of the illegal occupation of the Islands by the United Kingdomand almost 59 since resolution 2065. The time that has passed has not diminished the validity of our claim in any way, nor modified our conviction that this prolonged controversy must be resolved peacefully, through bilateral negotiations between my country and the United Kingdom,” said the Minister of Foreign Affairs at the UN.

The session of the Decolonization Committee took place in the United States.

The owner of the San Martín Palace recalled that this year marks sixty years since the famous speech by Ambassador José María Ruda before the same Committee, in which he presented the historical and legal titles of Argentina in the Question of the Malvinas Islandsexplaining its particular and different situation with respect to other colonial cases, in which the principle of territorial integrity is at stake, broken with the British occupation of that part of Argentine territory.

Mondino recalled that sixty years ago that same Committee had also unanimously approved the recommendations that were later collected by the General Assembly in its resolution 2065, of December 16, 1965.

With that, he stated that “the General Assembly and this Special Committee They set the path to decolonize the Malvinas Islands“This is a bilateral negotiation to reach a peaceful solution to the sovereignty dispute, taking into account the provisions and objectives of the Charter of the United Nations, resolution 1514, as well as the interests of the inhabitants of the Islands.”

“This conviction,” expressed the diplomat, “is shared by all the Argentine people, and is embodied in our National Constitution“The recovery of the full exercise of our sovereignty over the Islands and the surrounding maritime spaces, in accordance with international law and respecting the way of life of their inhabitants is a permanent and inalienable objective.”

Along those lines, he continued: “It is an issue that transcends political-party differences, and constitutes a State policy. As an example of this, today I am honored by representatives of the government of the Province of Tierra del Fuego, Antarctica and the South Atlantic Islands by joining our Delegation.”

As Mondino specified, “the inhabitants of the Islands are assured of the full enjoyment of human rights guaranteed by our National Constitution, as well as universal, public and free access to health and education systems at all levels, like every inhabitant of the Argentine soil. Respect for their way of life is enshrined in our National Constitution.”

He also reported that, since his inauguration last December, President Javier Milei has expressed his willingness to inaugurate a new phase in the relationship with the United Kingdomremembering that both countries have traditionally maintained a rich and mutually beneficial relationship, covering the most diverse areas of cooperation.

“In a dynamic global scenario, Argentina intends to develop its capabilities in the medium and long term, and generate a mature relationship with the United Kingdom, which contemplates a constructive dialogue on all issues of common interest,” he said.

And he continued: “The Argentine Government is convinced that through this dialogue a higher level of cooperation can be achieved, and hopes that this will generate the climate of trust necessary to resume negotiations to resolve the sovereignty dispute.”

The Argentine delegation, in addition to Mondino, was made up of the vice-governor of Tierra del Fuego, Antarctica and the South Atlantic Islands, Mónica Urquiza; the secretary of the Malvinas, Antarctica, Ocean Policy and South Atlantic, Paola Di Chiaro; the Argentine Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ricardo Lagorio; the Representative of the Malvinas Ex-Combatants Center in Ushuaia, VGM Raúl Francisco Rosales; the Secretary of Geopolitical Affairs in the Government of the Province of Tierra del Fuego, Antarctica and the South Atlantic Islands, Carolina Lavori Henninger, and authorities from the Foreign Ministry.
