Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and president of the Republic, spoke this Friday with Dennis Francis, president of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), on an official visit in Havana.

During the meeting, Díaz-Canel thanked him for his recognition of Cuba’s performance and commitment to finding solutions to the challenges of the Southern nations during the presidency of the G77 and China, as shared in his account on X.

In addition, both parties agreed on the challenges posed by the current international scenario, as well as the need to strengthen multilateralism and the UNGA as the most democratic body of the United Nations system.

Dennis Francis arrived in Cuba this Thursday, June 27, to carry out an official visit.

Francis, an important diplomat, native of Trinidad and Tobago, confessed that he had been waiting for this visit for a long time, reported Presidency Cuba.

“Cuba is a country of great importance, not only for the Caribbean, but for the world,” said the president of the UNGA, who described Cubans as “great people.”

On his first day on the Island, Francis offered a keynote lecture in the Aula Magna of the University of Havana, where, by agreement of the University Council, Dr. Miriam Nicado, rector of that institution, presented him with the 295th anniversary plaque of that institution. house of higher studies

This Friday he held a meeting with the Minister of Public Health, Dr. José Angel Portal Miranda, in which he recognized Cuba’s results in the health field.

“We discussed the particularities of the national health system and advances in science and innovation,” Portal Miranda said on his Telegram account.

In his X account, Francis said that the meeting discussed Cuba’s impressive advances in the fields of medicine, education and science.

“Cuba’s efforts to recover from COVID-19 underscore the critical importance of cooperation to sustain public health and build resilience to external shocks,” he said, adding that cooperation and resilience “are essential for sustained progress, prosperity and the achievement of the SDGs.”
