City of Puebla, Pue.- Thanks to the training and equipment for forest combatants, the strengthening of the video surveillance network and the incorporation of the Guard and Forest Police, actions promoted by Governor Alejandro Armenta, the forest area affected by fires was reduced by approximately 50 percent compared to the previous year, from 18,592 hectares to 9,262 hectares.
According to the records of the State Fire Management Center, between December 14, 2024 and May 5, 2025, 256 forest fires were registered in 70 municipalities of the State. These claims were attended by “Coyote” brigades of the Ministry of Environment Sustainable Development and Territorial Planning (SMADSOT), as well as by elements of the National Forestry Commission (Conafor), the Ministry of National Defense, the National Guard, the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (CONANP), Civil Protection, Air Services, Municipal Governments and Volunteers.
In this regard, the head of the SMADSOT, Rebeca Bañuelos Guadarrama, said that although the containment efforts have been successful, it is essential to stay on permanent alert and reinforce the call to the population to take care and conserve natural resources, especially before the coming weeks of high temperatures.
Of the total hectares affected, 6 thousand 197 correspond to herbaceous vegetation, 2,673 to shrub, and only 149 hectares to adult trees. The municipalities with the highest number of fires were Tlachichuca, Jolalpan and Xiutetelco.
