Budapest, May 8 (Effect) .- Hungary Prime Minister, the ultra-nationalist Viktor Orbán, said Thursday to completely dispense with Russian gas, as proposed by the European Commission (EC), it would be equivalent to a “frontal attack” for the countries of central Europe.
“The plan of (the president of the CE) Ursula von der Leyen is a frontal attack against central Europe and, thus, against Hungary. She has put on the table a proposal that ruins Europe and would lead to an unbearable burden for families,” Orbán said in a video published in the Facebook social network.
He alluded to the recent Brussels proposal so that the European Union emerges as soon as possible of Russian fuels, especially of uranium and gas, with measures such as gradually prohibiting new gas contracts with Moscow and breaking the existing ones in 2027.
According to Orbán, if Hungary stops buying Russia’s gas, less expensive than that from other sources, household expenses will multiply by two and a half.
President Magaria stressed that the issue of gas acquisition “is not a political issue, but economic” and congratulated himself that his Slovak counterpart, Robert Fico, has coincided with him in this vision when he also pronounced against the proposal.
“The rebellion has begun,” he said.
Orbán related the CE approach to the plans to boost the integration of Ukraine into the EU, an objective to which he also opposes, emphasizing that Brussels wants to pay the cost of that process to Europeans.
“Let’s not let Hungarian families pay the price of Ukraine adhesion!” He emphasized.
Hungary, whose government is an ally of Moscow, depends largely on Russian imports to meet its energy needs, because it acquires 80 % of the gas and 65 % of the oil it consumes. Effect
