With more than 6,800 million dollars at stake, Latin America is positioned as power in liquefied natural gas.
An energy megaproject of historical proportions is underway in Latin America: more than 6,800 million dollars will be invested to develop a liquefied natural gas plant (LNG) with annual production capacity between 1.5 and 2.2 million tons. The objective is not only to increase national production between 5% and 8% per year, but to position the country as a key and reliable actor in the global energy market.
The work will be carried out in the Gulf of San Matías, in the Argentine province of Río Negro, by the company Southern Energy SA, with gas extracted mainly from the Muerta Vaca site. The project contemplates an innovative floating liquefaction plant, which will use LNG’s goal technology to reduce deadlines and costs compared to land alternatives.
The Plan has the support of the Ministry of Economy of Argentina, which approved its adhesion to the incentive regime for large investments (Rigi). The construction will be carried out in two stages: the first with an investment of 1,603 million dollars, and the second with 1.2 billion.
According to the evaluation committee, the supply of the domestic market will not be affected, which reinforces the project commitment to local energy security while pointing to global export.
